UPDATE: The school district clerk determined that the affidavit ballot belonged to a voter registered in another school district. The ballot was not opened and the results of last week’s election stand.
The school district clerk will hold a meeting with school attorneys this afternoon to determine the validity of a ballot in last week’s election – a move that could determine the outcome of the race.
After the May 15 trustee election – which saw Greenburgh Board of Education trustees Cora Carey and Charles Bronz defeated – Ivy Kraus was appointed by the board to determine if an “affidavit ballot” should be opened to determine if it is valid.
Kraus said the meeting will be held at 2 p.m. today.
Affidavit ballots can be used by district residents to cast votes if their name isn’t found in registration rolls. On the ballot, the voter swears he or she is a district resident, is a qualified voter and the absence of their name from voter lists is an error.
The acceptance or rejection of the ballot could impact the race, in which Sonja Brown, a former Greenburgh councilwoman, defeated Carey by a single vote: 457 to 456.
It isn’t yet known for which candidate the ballot was cast, but the law allows the candidates or representatives to attend the meeting. The other winners – incumbent board President Terry Williams and newcomer Eric Bitterman – and the six other unsuccessful candidates likely will not be affected by the proceedings.
